Football has been played in this area since the 1870s, with the Goolwa club dating back to 1878. The GSFL was officially formed in 1923 as the Great Southern Football Association with founding clubs Encounter Bay, Goolwa, Hindmarsh Valley, Port Elliot, and Victor Harbor. Over the years, the league has grown and changed its name to the Great Southern Football League.
